Supercomputing Wales hosts inaugural conference

Supercomputing Wales held “A New Decade of Supercomputing” at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from 23rd – 24th January 2020.

The conference, which welcomed almost 90 delegates and a number of high-profile speakers, considered how High Performance Computing will develop over the next decade and the integral role of supercomputers in our future.

Roger Whitaker, Academic Director for Supercomputing Wales, said: “We were delighted to welcome such a diverse range of delegates and speakers to the conference. High Performance Computing will play a vital role in both academic and industrial research over the course of the next decade, and Supercomputing Wales is in ideal position to fulfil that demand.”

Biagio Lucini of Swansea University, said: “It is very exciting to see how far Supercomputing has come in Wales in supporting a range of important academic research topics, enabling our Universities to excel on a global scale. In particular, we have a large community of dedicated Research Software Engineers that have provided a step-change in the utilisation of HPC systems.”

AMs visit Supercomputing Wales

Members of the National Assembly for Wales’ Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee have visited the Supercomputing Wales data centre at Cardiff University, to gain an insight into the high-profile science and innovation taking place facilitated by the state-of-the-art facilities.

Much of the work being undertaken through Supercomputing Wales is aligned closely to areas of significant importance to the Welsh economy, including nano-scale materials and advanced engineering; energy and the environment; and life sciences and health.

Supercomputer Wales plays three vital roles in developing our economy. It helps to keep Welsh research cutting edge, allows our universities to train top class computer scientists and the computer power can be used by Welsh businesses and society to innovate. Facilities like this are a cornerstone of the future economy in Wales.”

Supercomputing Wales attends ISC 2019

A senior member of Supercomputing Wales attended ISC 2019 in Frankfurt to showcase the facilities and work being conducted by the programme.

Professor Biagio Lucini gave a presentation on how Supercomputing Wales harnesses the power of high performance computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence to help solve research problems, including the development of the world’s fastest boat.

ISC High Performance is the world’s longest-established conference and networking event for the HPC community. Taking place over five days from 16-21 June, the programme focused on HPC technological development and its application in scientific fields, as well as its adoption in commercial environments.

The conference brought together over 3,500 researchers and commercial users and 160 exhibitors to share their experiences with the latest technology and products of interest to the HPC community.

Supercomputing Wales co-hosts data-driven systems medicine event

Supercomputing Wales, with Dell EMC, Atos, Advanced Research Computing at Cardiff (ARCCA), and the Systems Immunity Research Institute, co-hosted a two-day data-driven systems medicine workshop at Cardiff University on 11 and 12 June 2019.

The event welcomed 15 expert speakers from across industry and academia, including Dr. Rob Orford, Chief Scientific Advisor for Health for Welsh Government; Dr. Ceire Costelloe, Senior Lecturer at Department of Primary Care and Public Health at Imperial College London and Director of Global Digital Health Unit; and Dr. Venkatesh Pilla Reddy, Associate Principal Scientist, Modelling and Simulation, DMPK, Oncology | IMED Biotech Unit, AstraZeneca.

The workshop explored the applicability of machine learning and computational methods in systems medicine, as a first step on the path to personalised medicine.

Around 70 attendees discussed the ways that Artificial Intelligence and Systems Modelling can be applied to issues relating to medicine and healthcare using best practice to detail the synergies and interfaces between the different scientific communities and IT industry.

Supercomputing Wales joins forces to develop next generation of Artificial Intelligence leaders

Supercomputing Wales will be at the forefront of the global revolution in Artificial Intelligence, after funding from the UK government to create one of 16 new Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) in Artificial Intelligence.

Part of a £100m investment by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Centre is aimed at enabling a new generation of PhD students to use AI technology to improve healthcare, tackle climate change, analyse Big Data and create new commercial opportunities.

The UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Advanced Computing will be led by Swansea University’s Professor Gert Aarts of the Department of Physics, working with Supercomputing Wales and the Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff and Bristol, and a range of external partners, including large multinationals and locally-based SMEs.

Supercomputing Wales attends SC18

Two senior members of Supercomputing Wales attended SC18 in Dallas to showcase the facilities and work being conducted by the programme.

Professor Martyn Guest and Dr Christine Kitchen gave presentations on how Supercomputing Wales delivers compute capacity to researchers across the country.

Around 400 attendees were present at Professor Guest’s presentation at the Dell EMC HPC Community Meeting on 12 November. Further presentations were delivered at the conference, offering the opportunity to engage with suppliers and potential collaborators.

2018 marked the 30th anniversary of the conference of high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis. The conference aims to celebrate the contributions of researchers and scientists to the field of HPC.

Over 13,070 people attended the conference, more than ever before.

Supercomputing Wales celebrates official launch at Senedd

Assembly Members, representatives from Cardiff, Swansea, Bangor and Aberystwyth universities and representatives from the suppliers Dell EMC and Atos celebrated the official launch of Supercomputing Wales at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on Thursday 11 October.

Research Software Engineers (RSEs) from the consortium universities displayed posters at the event, detailing the work they are conducting using the supercomputing facilities, and delegates were provided with a selection of Case Studies.

The £15m programme has been funded with £9m through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government, which has been matched by a multi-million-pound investment from the university partners.

Professor Roger Whitaker, Academic Director for Supercomputing Wales said: “Supercomputing Wales will unlock the world-class research capabilities we have here in Wales, placing the country on a firm competitive footing worldwide.”

Supercomputing Wales infrastructure refresh

The new supercomputer hubs at Cardiff and Swansea serving the four consortium universities will be fully refreshed during the first half of 2018, with research teams across the consortium universities accessing the two hubs through high-speed network connections. In total, the facilities will consist of 13,000 cores connected to high speed memory and storage.
